This one was a gift for Iris, in honor of her recent 17th birthday.

She is a painted cloth primitive folk-art style Catrina, who is feeling her Gypsy side. She chose these bright orange/red ribbons and beads to adorn her head and the fuchsia pink doily as her dancing skirt. I can imagine her doing the Flamenco. Ooh, I should have given her a fancy lace fan! Or maybe a Gypsy version of the Mexican hat dance? See the tiny vintage butterfly rhinestone button decorating the front of her belt? She is ready to party all night long at the cemetery for the Day of the Dead.

What to do with a quadrillion vintage buttons? I'm obsessed with buttons, which may explain why my collection is so vast. But enough is enough.. or so I recently declared. I decided I simply have to sell some of them, but marketing buttons is depressing. No one seems to want these little treasures! How can that BE?? Internet markets are overflowing with underpriced vintage buttons and this just tells me that no one can see the potential in them the way I do.

And so, I'm back to button bracelets... I like to think of them as unique little collections you wear on your wrist. As all of my previous bracelets, this is crocheted on strong nylon cord, solidly tied and glued so it is very durable. If you love it, I can only say "stay tuned" for the next creation because this one was sold before it was even finished.

This one is a very special cloth-and-clay doll that came together in a very surprising way. I had a sudden opportunity to participate in a couple of doll events that will coincide with the NIADA conference coming up in Portland this July, but have not been making many dolls lately. I had started this one several years ago, but only had sewn and stuffed the basic body and applied the clay, then added the striped legs. I wasn't sure where it was going and lost my momentum… so sadly, her lifeless form was laying in a box for years. With little time till deadline, and wanting to bring something new to show, I picked her up again and made some quick decisions. Soon, she was guiding me and telling me what to use next.

First came the skirt, a vintage hankie once owned by my mother-in-law. It looked great with the black-and-white striped legs. Pulling the colors from that floral print, I used chartreuse sari silk and used one of my favorite techniques to wrap her upper arms and sash the upper bodice. Then I found a delicious piece of deep pink velvet ribbon attached to a large lace collar in my vintage fabrics box and clipped it free. As I worked on clipping those threads, I realized this very old velvet ribbon was also silk. Most scrumptious! It was delicate and worn in places, but I wrapped it snugly and used tiny hand stitches to hold it in place.

As I started work on this doll, the "event" I was getting her ready for, a "Tea Party" hosted by local doll artists for attendees of the NIADA conference, spawned a "pop-up" doll show which will be held for two short weeks at Guardino Gallery. Labels needed to be printed, so this piece needed a name. Playing in the background while I worked was one of my old Elton John albums, Tumbleweed Connection… specifically, a song called Amoreena. And with that, she had her name.
This is a crazy quickie doll I made for my adored sister. She's been a Who fan, and a Roger Daltrey-o-phile since the age of 11, when I took her to see the movie, Tommy in 1975. That's all it took. She attended her first of many live Who shows not long after that, and adorned her bedroom walls with posters of Roger. (She might still, if she could get away with it.)

On my last birthday, she surprised me with tickets to Fleetwood Mac… one of my all-time favorite bands. So how could I possibly match that? Only if The Who went on tour, which they thankfully decided to do, just for me! So, her birthday gift this time around was a ticket to their 2015 tour… "The Who Hits 50!", next September. Since we have to wait ten months till the actual concert, I had to do something else extra special. And so I presented her with Roger.
Vintage molded glass buttons from the early 20th century… with one dazzling little red glass faceted rhinestone mixed in. I adore them! I love wearing them almost as much as I love making them. There is something wonderful about a lovely piece of jewelry that you can look at while you're wearing it, without needing a mirror. Having something shiny around my wrist is just exactly the perfect thing. Here are a few recent delights, some of which are still listed in my Etsy shop.

I asked her what was wrong… and other than being upset that she missed the Cyndi Lauper concert, she finally admitted she was just lonely. "You never have time for me", she sniffed… "You just dress me up, paint my cheeks, knot my hair ribbons and leave me alone." Poor little party girl!

I could see it in her eyes. It was time for her to take a trip. As soon as I told her about my idea, her toes began to wiggle. She could barely contain her urge to dance!

Father Time is a mixed-media assemblage, meant for hanging outside & made as a birthday gift for my eldest. I've been carrying some of these elements around for years, waiting for the right project. Since my son recently bought a new house with a couple of lovely wooded acres, I'm hoping he hikes out into the middle of it all and finds a nice tree to hang this piece on. There he will stay, deteriorating naturally over time and eventually melding with the forest itself.

She picked out the bottle, a vintage L'Air du Temps bottle by Nina Ricci, and let me work it up… just for her. I loved this one so much, I need to make myself one just like it now!

Deep garnet red glass beads fill the bottle just part way… so they can move and shake. Making their presence known. The bottle is wrapped with aged copper wire and it hangs from a length of antique brass colored mini-ball chain. With the wire wrap, this pendant measures 1 & 1/2 inches tall.
This mixed-media collage was created as a gift for my son's birthday. It was done on a box framework... the front and all four sides are collaged. The two focal elements are the vintage photograph of the "scout" which I bought at an antique store, then copied and cut out…. and the vintage key. Other elements include vintage newspaper, typed and handwritten text, postage stamps, direct image transfers and paper ephemera. The entire piece was coated with a thin layer of beeswax. 7" x 7" x 1.75"

I started working on this piece about three years ago, starting out with just the photographic image and the key. From there, I knew I wanted to use vintage papers as a background, then found the hand-drawn map image in a National Geographic magazine and felt it just belonged to this story somehow. Then I got stuck, set it aside and really couldn't get moving on it until recently.

This time, as I worked, the story began to tell itself and it took on an ecology narrative… about how we modern humans have "mucked" things up in our thirst for money and power. Sub-texts include the theme of being lost in the wilderness, of our polarized society and the things we are not paying attention to as the healthy balance in our precious world slips through our fingers.
As I was finishing the collage, the last task was to punch holes and wire on the key. I had the radio on, listening to old rock and roll, and wondering what the title of this piece was going to be. I was literally holding that old key in my hand as Blind Faith's song, Can't Find My Way Home came on… "Come down off your throne and leave your body alone. Somebody must change. You are the reason I've been waiting so long. Somebody holds the key", and BOOM… I had my title. That song has been a favorite of mine for many, many years and it could not have been more profoundly right for this work.
I wander down that aisle now and then, hoping that somehow things will have changed… but, no. Same old beer and fart jokes… and groaners about the perils of getting old. I might look at a few, but soon I heave a heavy sigh and go home to rummage through my drawers of vintage papers and other ephemera and put something together myself.

The last half of March is birthday-heavy in my family. Here are a few I did recently for a triple-whammy party, the highlight of which was celebrating my dad's 85th!
Layers of vintage book pages and handwritten text, randomly torn and adhered to the heavy card substrate. Then "primed" with matte medium for better tooth to add colors with colored pencil, chalk, watercolor and acrylic paint. I do lots of light wash layers and blot them almost entirely away, then build up again. I want a smudged look to mouths and cheeks, letting the reds and pinks bleed out… and many shades are involved in getting skin color the way I want it. Not realistic by any means. I want imperfection and strange shadows. This piece got a final coat of acrylic aging varnish which gives *almost* the effect that wax does to an encaustic painting. It enriches the colors and makes things blur a little more (because it's water based).
Mixed-media collage made as a birthday gift for one of my oldest friends. Vintage papers, acrylic paint, colored pencil and image transfers on an upcycled child's board book page. 8" x 9"

This piece was a really fun one because I just let it lead me along. I had done another collage painting with the bare tree image with the triple spheres and had a basic notion of using that design again. In terms of choosing the other images and text, it started out as a random process… not thinking about it, just DOING it. Then a theme started surfacing… sleep and dreams. Only after I had filled in the large circle with a light blue wash of color, and wrote the word "dream" above it, I noticed that the text in the under layer said, "Where was she?" The next lines are partially obscured but say, "Awake or dreaming?" Did I pick that up subliminally?
I wasn't trying for perfection… just seeing what came through and trusting it. It intentionally turned out a bit like an art journal page, rather than a "piece of art". I love the motion of the curved lines and arrows in the pattern tissue… and the flock of swallows. The birds are an image from an old children's book that I've been saving for a long time for just the right project. Feels good to be working like this again. More to come!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05055954157201368907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7744567512976070414.post-82077582218053755842013-10-29T09:04:00.000-07:002013-10-29T09:07:02.802-07:00Calavera WandsThe rattle wands that don't rattle.
My grand scheme for making wands that actually rattle didn't pan out. As seen in a previous post, I started out putting pebbles inside walnut shells, but alas… not all ideas end up being workable.

I started over, gathering suitable twigs from under my neighbor's gigantic copper beech tree. I see this tree every day from my northern windows, towering over the neighborhood. We 4th Avenue residents all curse the tree a little bit in the spring when it's fuzzy little blossoms are blowing around, sticking to everything… and at this time of year, while it sheds it's two tons of leaves and (some years) prickly seed pods across at least three of our backyards, but it's magestic presence is worth it! This Grand Dame has donated her discarded branches to more than a few of my projects and I can always count on finding just the right piece to serve as a doll's spine or limbs.

These sugar skulls are polymer clay sculpted over bases of tightly wadded aluminum foil with wire embedded into the center, which was then wrapped around the wooden twig wands. They were then painted in a fairly common Day of the Dead motif… with joyful flowers in eye sockets, hearts and crosses. I love how this tradition teaches us to embrace our departed ancestors in festive celebration, with color, flowers and sweets. My calavera (Spanish for skull) wands are standing in a small tin bucket of red stones and ready for display at Guardino Gallery's 2013 Day of the Dead show, running through November 24th. Getting ready for the Day of the Dead show at Guardino Gallery, where I'm slated to have a few pieces included. Feeling the pressure.

Oddly, whatever direction I *thought* I was going in this week has not quite worked out. One dead end or minor catastrophe after another. Thought I was going to spend today modeling paperclay skulls, but I put on Tumbleweed Connection and found out Bernie and Elton had other plans. I sort of fell down their mysterious rabbit hole and ended up cutting, hammering, pickling and filing little copper heart charms.

Sometimes you just have to smash apart all your ideas or expectations and start over. So.... go ahead. Burn, burn, burn, burn down the mission walls and see what happens! One of these folky prim heart charms will adorn the chest of my Catrina doll which is being reworked a little for this show. Successfully solved a very basic but frustrating construction problem today that will allow them to actually rattle. Now, how to stabilize the necks better than the ones I made last year. Time to break out the Apoxie Sculpt?

I look for them wherever I go. Had my eyeballs peeled at the Plucky Maidens Junk Fest on Thursday, but didn't really see any. Maybe they've had their heyday and I'm just behind the curve? If so, too bad... because I adore them.

I especially love to wrap them around my wrists... simply crocheted on C-Lon cord. Here's my most recent creation... a dainty little bracelet, all in white.

Each button is different, some shell, some glass. The closure is a loop over a white shoe button.

A few that I chose for this piece are especially worn and aged, a little grimy even. One glass button was actually unearthed in my backyard, and I left some of the dirt in the pattern crevices on purpose.
The body is made of an old wool Navy blanket and the right eye is a button off my dad's own Navy uniform from the late 1940's. I've been carrying that button around for years. Some other details and charms are specific to some of my dad's skills, accomplishments and interests. He used to have his pilot's license and owned a small plane, hence the propeller up top. There are also some bits of fishing tackle, gears and skeleton keys... just random generally "manly" trinkets. A vintage clock hand makes a great necktie.

But then I just froze up. Think I've seriously lost my creative mojo, people. Life has been ultra weird lately and the stress level is high all around me. So, I left the doll laying cold on the slab and decided instead to spend the rest of the day looking EvErYwHeRe for some spark of inspiration.

Color does it every time. Is there anything better than this bright chartreuse next to the deep purple-y blue of the pansies?

Last summer, I embarked on a collaborative "round robin" project with seven other doll makers, from all around the country. We each started a doll and sent it on to the next person in the circle, for each to add a little something and begin shaping the character and personality of the doll that would return to each of us in the spring. Mine started out as just a torso. More or less a blank slate!
